Why is one corner of the SIM card cut off!

In engineering, this concept (SIM corner cut) known as Poka Yoke, a term derived from the Japanese language which basically means “Mistake Proofing“.

Consider the geometric shapes of a square and a rectangle, both having 4 vertices. If the SIM card were designed as a square, it would allow for eight different placement possibilities. Similarly, a rectangle would provide four possibilities. However, to achieve “Fool Proofing“, the number of possibilities must be reduced to just one. This is where the practice of cutting a corner comes into play.

The purpose of “Fool Proofing” is to ensure that even if an inexperienced individual assembles two components, they will always fit together as intended by the design. In the case of the SIM card, the design ensures that the metal contacts of the electronic circuit consistently make contact with some part of the seam, independent of the person handling it.

In engineering, this concept known as Poka Yoke, a term derived from the Japanese language which basically means “Mistake Proofing“. Interestingly, it was suggested by a female worker at a Toyota Factory who had a strong dislike for the term “Fool Proofing” that was previously in use.
